| How important are freight rates for
railroad shipments when you are involved in choosing a site for a new
facility? If the answer is very and the plant will be located in
the Southeastern United States then you should look at Anderson County, South
Carolina; Pickens County, South Carolina; and the Pickens Railway Company.
Anderson County, SC is located near the geographical center of seven major cites of the Southeast. These are Greenville, SC (45 minutes); Spartanburg, SC (70 minutes); Charlotte, NC (2-1/2 hours); Columbia, SC (2 hours); Charleston, SC (4 hours); Augusta, Ga. (90 minutes); and Atlanta, Ga. ( 3hours) The city of Anderson is the county seat and the hub of economic activity. About 20 minutes north of Anderson is Clemson University. Clemson is a major university and offers just about everything your employees and their families might want in higher education. Just west of Anderson is lake Hartwell, to the north lake Keowee, and to the south lake Thurmond. These three lakes make up one of the largest fresh water recreational areas in the Southeast. Anderson is within a hour's drive of the Smokey Mountains, within 4 hours drive of historic Charleston, SC and within 5 hours drive of the entire South Carolina Coast from Hilton Head to Myrtle Beach. There is a major nuclear electric generating plant and a coal fired electric generating plant near by. The Greenville-Spartanburg metro area is one of the fastest growing in America. It is the next great major metropolitan area in the Southeast and will probably pass Atlanta in size in the next 20 years. Anderson County is southwest of the Greenville-Spartanburg and has hundreds of sites for new industrial development. Many of these sites can be served by the Pickens Railway Company. Anderson County offers nearby access to several interstate highways like I-85, I-26, I-95, I-20, and I-77. It offers service from both Norfolk Southern Railway and CSX Transportation. The Pickens Railway interchanges with both Class 1 railroads. Any transportation manager knows how important it is to have service from more than one class 1 railroad when it comes to negotiating freight rates. |
